 Development of a high grip designing tool

Many injuries caused by slipping could be avoided if appropriate sole materials and tread were chosen. Instead, there continues to be many accidents in the work environment most of which, i.e. 44.2%, are caused by slipping, 41.4% by trips and 14.4% are sprains. This is due to a great variety of combinations of floorings and contaminants for which certain occupational shoes may not be prepared. The interest to increase the anti-slip properties of firstly professional footwear is now expanding more and more to other types of footwear, such as sport shoes, leisure, etc.

This highlights that the existing legislation regarding the slip resistance properties of footwear is inadequate in certain cases. The legislation in force in the European Union clearly establishes the safety requirements of protective footwear, one of them being the footwear’s slip resistance property. On the other hand, according to the EU Construction Products Directive (89/106/EEC), floorings must achieve the CE marking requirements, which also include the declaration of slip resistance.

But at present no harmonised test method has been developed for measurement of the slip resistance of floorings, so manufacturers has to carry out a series of slip resistance tests to comply with the various national requirements, and try to guarantee the fitness for the intended use on the basis of their experience with the different test methods.

Considering this situation, during the project it will be developed guidelines and a specific software which could be used as a design tools for soles and floorings to optimise their performance in relation to slipping. The software will be validate with several combinations of floorings and soles, and will be used to study the relationship between adhesion, friction, and surface properties (floor and sole) in different conditions (dry, wet, contaminated, etc.) as a way to speed up the manufacturers innovative activities in creating new possibilities on anti-slip soles or floorings.
